Keep or Return Your MA License Plates

You need to remove the license plates before you turn the donated car over to the charity.

Once you've done this, you can transfer the plates (and your registration) within seven days to a recently bought new or used car. If you don't do that, you must return the plates to the Massachusetts RMV either in person or by mail. You can also cancel your registration online.

In Person

Just go to a RMV office and hand in your license plate, where you'll receive a plate receipt. You may then go to a local assessor's office with the receipt and see if you're due an excise tax refund.

By Mail

Send your plates to the following address, and you'll get your plate receipt in the mail.

Attn: Express
Registry of Motor Vehicles
P.O. Box 55889
Boston, MA 02205-5889

Online

Visit the RMV online branch and follow the instructions provided for a registration cancellation; you can print out your plate receipt.

Additional Donate Car Information

Think you might want to donate a car? Be sure to look into the tax laws regarding car donations so that you'll maximize the financial advantage of your vehicle donation.

And, take some time to investigate the car donation charity, see if it's legitimate, and understand what they do with the donated used cars.
