Donate Car Process

You don't really need to tell the RMV about the car donation itself. But, you will need to do something with the license plates - and that involves the RMV.

Before you donate a car, you must remove the Massachusetts plates. You can do a register transfer within seven days of the vehicle donation and use those plates on a recently bought new or used car.

If you choose not to do that - or don't have a car to transfer the plates to - you must turn in your plates to the RMV. You can simply hand over the plates at a RMV office. You'll be given a plate receipt, which you can take to a local assessor's office and possibly get an excise tax refund.

But, you can also cancel your registration/plates online at the MA RMV online branch, and print your receipt. Or, you can send your license plate to the following address and have your receipt mailed to you:

Attn: Express
Registry of Motor Vehicles
P.O. Box 55889
Boston, MA 02205-5889

Of course, you'll need to give your car title to the charity in order to have a successful title transfer. This applies to all types of donations for used cars.

Other Car Donation Information

Have any other questions regarding car donations? Titles? Registrations? Call the MA RMV at (617) 351-4500 or (800) 858-3926.
