Transferring a Massachusetts Title

The hardest step is finding your car title. Once you've done that, the rest of the car donation title transfer process is a breeze. (If you can't find the title, you'll need to apply for a duplicate title. See the Massachusetts RMV site for details.)

Just sign your name and write in the date in the title seller section, even though you're not "selling" your vehicle. Then, have the charity fill in the appropriate buyer information, and sign the title, too. This process works no matter what type of used car you're giving to the charitable organization.

Cancel Your Plates After You Donate Car

After you donate a car, you have seven days to transfer your plates to a new car or used car you just bought. If you don't want to do that, you'll need to cancel the plates (and your registration) by bringing the plates to a RMV office. You'll be given a plate receipt, which you can take to a tax assessor's office and receive a possible tax excise adjustment.

Alternatively, you can cancel your plates through the RMV online branch, or mail your plates to:

Attn: Express
Registry of Motor Vehicles
P.O. Box 55889
Boston, MA 02205-5889

You can print your receipt if you choose the online method, or receive your receipt in the mail if you select the mail option.
