Are there exemptions to the window tint law in Massachusetts? Massachusetts
Car Tint Medical Exemption
Yes, you can get a medical exemption that allows your windows to exceed the Massachusetts window tinting limits. To qualify for the window tint exemption, a licensed physician must provide written evidence that you suffer from light sensitivity (also known as being photosensitive). The request will be made to the RMV medical advisory board.
If the board approves your application, you'll be given a sticker to attach to the driver's side window indicating that you're permitted to exceed the window tint standard. The RMV will also keep a record of this.
Just for your information, the standard window tint limits are:
- Front side windows: 35% visible light transmission (VLT)
- Rear side windows: 35% VLT
- Rear window: 35% VLT
Safety Inspection
All cars must pass an annual safety inspection in order to have their vehicle registration renewed; tinted windows are examined as part of this process. If you're pulled over by law enforcement for violating the auto tinting laws, you could receive a traffic ticket and fine, and possibly lose your license.
Obviously, police take the tint law seriously - and so should you.
