Donate Car in Your State and Receive Tax Write Off

If you donate a car in your state, it might be tax deductible. Whether you receive one depends on several factors:

  • You can only claim a tax deduction if you itemize deductions on Schedule A of Form 1040.
  • Your deduction cannot exceed 50% of your adjusted gross income.
  • Your charity of choice must be a qualified organization.
  • You have proper car donation documents on file to substantiate your tax deduction submission. Documents for car donations vary, contingent on deduction amounts.
Before selecting a charity and making a vehicle donation do some research. Be suspicious of any charity that claims "maximum deduction" or "full fair market value." Make sure it is recognized by the IRS as a qualified organization.

You can find charity background information with your local Better Business Bureau or by visiting the IRS website and opening Publication 78, Cumulative List of Charities. Or, if you have the charity's name and address, you can verify its status by calling the IRS Customer Account Services division for Tax Exempt Government Entities at (877) 829-5500.
