Does the vehicle have to be running in order to donate car?
Donate Car Regardless of Condition
Car condition requirements vary by charity and sometimes by state. You'll find, however, that most charities will accept most vehicles regardless of engine condition. Rejection is rare. Usually it only occurs when a charity estimates that the vehicle's condition is so poor that its auction value will not offset the cost to tow it.If you have a vehicle in questionable condition, check with the charity. Most have websites with FAQ pages that usually address this question. Or, if not, call directly and chat with a charity representative. You'll find most charities are exceptionally accommodating when it comes to car donations.
How to Donate a Car
Do some research before deciding on a charity. You can do this by checking with your local Better Business Bureau for specific charity information. If your main intent is to receive a tax deduction, check with the IRS. Only tax deductions from charities recognized by the IRS will be honored. After narrowing your list of charities to a select few consider the following questions when making your final decision:
- Does the charity provide free pick-up service? This is important if your vehicle does not run.
- How will the charity allocate funds generated from your vehicle donation? Does the money stay local or go to a national office?
