Baby Car Seat Recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has a database with all the recalled child car seats in it. This database allows you to search for a car seat by:

  • Car Manufacturer, for those with built-in car seats.
  • Child safety seat manufacturer, for all other car seats.
Baby car seats, once recalled, should be pulled off store shelves. Additionally, many stores that sell car seats also post recalls on the store walls. News reports also might draw your attention to a recall.

If you’re buying a used car seat or receiving one from a friend, you should check the database to make sure the car seat hasn’t been recalled.

Used Car Seats

The NHTSA says you should not use a car seat that has been in a crash.

If you choose to use one, remember you cannot tell if a used car seat is safe. It’s best to:

  • Get a used car seat only from a trusted friend or relative.
  • Use car seats that are fewer than five years old. There is an expiration date stamp on the car seat.
  • Look for damage, like broken or cracked plastic, or weak straps.
  • Order the instruction booklet from the manufacturer, if it didn’t come with the seat.
