Tethers Help Anchor Car Seats

A car seat tether is part of the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) attachment system. It's an upper strap that helps anchor car seats to vehicle frames and prevents them from toppling forward in the event of collisions or emergency stops.

Top tethers became standard features on all baby car seats and child car seats in 2002. A top tether usually attaches to a hook that can be found on the floors of SUVs and family mini-vans or the rear dashes of sedans. All cars manufactured after 2002 are equipped with this hook.

For help in attaching, check the car seat's instruction manual. Even if you think the tether is properly secured, you should still have it checked at a child safety seat inspection station. These stations are free. The website for the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration (NHSTA) offers an inspection station search page based on zip code.

Understand Your State’s Child Restraint Laws

When driving with kids be sure you're in compliance with your state's safety laws as they apply to car seat laws. Failure to have the proper baby car seat or booster could result in steep fines.
