Getting a California Car Dealer License

When you apply for a dealer license, you only pay the fee for the application and then pay the other fees later, after approval. Keep in mind that you're responsible for renting the business and coming up with the surety bond or deposit prior to making your application, which will run you thousands of more dollars.

- Autobroker fee (in addition to application fee): $100

New Car Dealers

- Dealer Education Certificate (the class you took first).
- A copy of your filing as a corporation or LLC, if applicable.
- Copies of your fictitious name statement, lease, business license, and resale permit.
- Photos of your dealership location.
What Happens Next?
You must turn these completed forms and other documentation in to an Occupational Licensing Inspections Office. Locations are on the CA DMV website.The next step before you can begin car sales is allowing time for a state inspector to go over the application and do the background check. The inspector will then visit the business site and inspect it.
Once you have passed these hurdles, the inspector will issue you a temporary permit, then a regular license in about 120 days.
The dealer license is good for one year, then you can renew every two years.
If you do not pass, you will be told why.
Abbreviated Application
You should file an Abbreviated Application if you have:- A business bankruptcy.
- Conviction.
- Outstanding civil judgment.
- Prior departmental actions.
