Auto Dealers License Fees
To get a dealer license for selling used cars or new cars, you must pay fees to California up front:- Non-refundable application fee: $175
- Family support fee: $1
Once you have your application underway to get the dealer license approved, expect to also pay some or all of these fees:
- Autobroker fee: $100
- New Motor Vehicle Board fee (for auto sales of new vehicles) $225
- Each branch location fee: $70
- Dealer plate fee: $57 each, plus county fees
- Motorcycle plate fee: $59 each, plus county fees
Keep in mind that car dealers will have many additional upfront expenses for auto sales that are not included in the CA DMV fees, including:
- A surety bond.
- Rental or lease fee for the dealership property, or purchase of the property.
- Purchasing your inventory.
- Insurance.
Renew License Fees
The first license renewal takes place one year after your initial dealers license application. After that, your car dealer license expires every two years. In addition to the fees, you must take a Continuing Education class every two years and show proof of passing.You’ll pay:
- Renewal application fee: $125
- Family Support Program fee: $1
- Auto plate fee: $56 each
- Motorcycle plate fee: $58 each
- New Motor Vehicle Board fee: $225 for each location
- Autobroker Endorsement fee: $75
