Obtaining Your CA Salesperson License

Becoming as sales person for a car dealer in California requires more than walking in off the street and putting on a blazer. You need to get a salesperson license authorizing you to work for a dealer, which requires a fee, forms, and a background investigation.

Start by downloading the Vehicle Salesperson Handbook at the CA DMV website. You will also need to be hired in auto sales, to sell used cars or new cars, before you fill out this paperwork. Dealers generally hire you, and then have you fill out the licensing form. You must write down the name of the auto dealers.

Fill out:

  • Form OL 16, Application for Occupational License.
  • DMV Form 8016, the request for Live Scan (fingerprints). This costs another $32 and is done offsite. The local sheriff’s office or police can tell you where to go, as can the DMV.

Other Details

  • The process takes about 120 days. Once the initial background check is done, you can get a temporary license so you can start car sales.
  • The license is good for three years.
  • If you change dealerships, you’ll need to transfer the license.

Auto Salesperson Fees

In addition to the fingerprint fees listed above, you'll also see the following fees:

  • Non-refundable application fee: $50
  • Family Support Program fee: $1
  • License reinstatement fee: $50
  • License transfer fee (from other car dealers): $15
