California Salesperson License Fees

Before you may begin working for car dealers as a sales person, you must apply for a sales person license. Auto dealers of used cars and new cars both require this license in the state of California. You must first get a car dealer to hire you, and then begin the application process.

The car sales person license involves getting fingerprints and filling out an application form. Fees include:

  • Non-refundable application fee: $50
  • Family Support Program fee: $1
  • Fingerprinting fee:  $32 (This is the typical price and the task is done and paid for at a third-party location; ask the CA DMV for locations.)

Additional Fees

You might have to pay one of these fees if you work at a different dealer, let your license lapse, or need to renew:

  • License reinstatement fee: $50
  • License transfer fee (to work for another dealer): $15
  • License renewal: $50
A license to work as a salesperson in auto sales is good for three years. You are responsible for filling out a renewal application before it expires.
