No NY Salesperson License Fees

New York does not require a sales person license in order to sell vehicles regardless if they're new cars or used cars. So, if you want to work for a dealership, there aren't any license fees to deal with.

And, if you're a NY dealer, you're free to hire any salesperson you want to hire.

This does not mean you're not bound to other rules and regulations related to working in auto sales. To own and manage a dealership you must possess a NY auto dealers license. This requires submitting the following:

  • A car dealers application and paying the $37.50 application fee and $450 license fee.
  • Proof of an actual place of business. This must include a sign, phone service, heat, electricity, and a desk and have proper vehicle display space. In addition, within the office, you must also have the following forms: bills of sale, odometer and damage statements, warranty forms, and a book of registry.
  • Proof of a surety bond.
  • Proof of worker's compensation insurance.
  • A completed Business Certificate.
  • A copy of the NY Department of Tax and Finance DTF-17A Certificate of Authority.

After Applying for a Dealers License

There are no guarantees your car dealer application will be accepted. Some common reasons for rejection include possessing a criminal record, no proof of ownership, no proof of a physical location, and providing incorrect information.

If approved to be a car sales dealer, expect the NY DMV to take about 60 days to process your dealer application.
