To sell used cars and/or new cars in North Carolina (NC) dealers are required to secure a dealer license. Auto dealers must meet requirements established by the North Carolina Department of Transportation’s Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to gain a dealers license.Contact the nearest NC DMV service office to request an auto dealers license application.
Car Dealer Business Location Requirements
Physical requirements for car dealer physical business locations are as follows:- Dealership must have at least 96 square feet or more of showroom space. (It is permissible for a retail auto dealer to establish a dealership next to his private residence if the dealership has an entrance that is separate from the private residence.)
- Auto dealers that operate as wholesalers are required to have at least 96 square feet of office space. They do not have to create a showroom to house the cars that they sell.
- One or more signs that list the name of the dealership should be placed on the dealership property.
- Business name should be registered with the NC Register of Deeds in the county that the car sales or auto sales are conducted in.
Car Dealer Surety Bond Requirements
Before car dealers open their business in NC they must obtain a corporate surety bond in the amount of $50,000 to cover one salesroom. Each additional salesroom requires a $25,000 corporate surety bond.Comprehensive liability insurance and a trader’s license (contact the local county or city clerk’s office to obtain trader’s license applications) are also required.
Car Dealer Application Requirements
Dealers who meet the above requirements are ready to complete the auto dealers license application.Provide details on the application such as:
- Auto business name and address, including street, city, state, and zip code. (Wholesale auto dealers should provide the aforementioned details on each of their offices.)
- Whether or not the dealer was convicted of fraud related to selling stolen autos (i.e. new cars, used cars, rental cars). Dealers who received a conviction within five years of applying for an auto dealer’s license are not eligible to receive a dealer license in NC.
