Get Details on the North Carolina Car Salesperson License

The North Carolina Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) sets rules and regulations that each salesperson who works for auto dealers and car dealers must meet. The Department requires that each sales person who sells new cars and used cars in North Carolina (NC) receive a salesperson license.

Visit the nearest DMV service center to request the sales person license application. You will need the license before you start to conduct auto sales or car sales for a dealer in NC.

Details to provide on the application include:

  • Your name and contact information (i.e. street address, city, state, zip code, telephone number).
  • Your birth date (you must be at least 18 years old to sell cars for dealers in NC).
  • Name of the auto dealership where you will be selling new cars and/or used cars. Provide the dealership address, including street, city, state, and zip code.
  • Whether or not you were convicted of fraud related to selling stolen autos (i.e. new cars, used cars, rental cars) within the last five years.
NC prohibits car salespersons from working for more than one car dealer. After you complete the NC car salesperson license application, mail it to the address shown on the application form.
