No New Jersey Sales Person License Required for Auto Sales

The NJ MVC does not require a salesperson license in order to conduct car sales. This salesperson waiver applies to any dealership, regardless whether it sells new cars, used cars, or both. So if you're a car dealer you will not lose your car dealers license due to "non-registered" sales employees.

This does not mean your business is immune to government oversight. The MVC could still suspend or revoke your auto dealers license if you're non-compliant with any of the following regulations:

  • Failure to maintain records or ledgers at your business location.
  • Misuse of re-assignment certificates.
  • Misuse of temporary registration certificates.
  • Failure to possess vehicle titles.
  • Conducting car sales from other non-licensed dealer location.
  • Misuse of dealer plates (cannot be used for hire or commercial designed vehicles).
For other questions related to dealers, contact the NJ Business Licensing unit at (609) 292-6500 ext. 5014.
