Illinois Car Dealers License Fees

The fees for an Illinois car dealers license are as follows:

  • $1,000 annual fee ($500 after June 15).
  • $100 supplemental license fee for car sales of new cars.
  • $50 supplemental license fee for auto sales of used cars.
  • $45 master plates fee (annual).
  • $13 fee for the first duplicate plate.
  • $78 fee for additional duplicate plates.
  • $3 fee for additional ID cards.

Dealer License Expiration and Renewal

Applicants for an initial dealer license pay an application fee of $500 if applying after June 15 of the calendar year. Dealer licenses expire on December 31 of each calendar year, at which time auto dealers must pay renew license fees. License renewal fees consist of the $1,000 annual fee and master plates fee.

Mandatory Background Check


The only additional dealers fee is for the mandatory background check. Previously, the cost of the background check was included in the application fee and the check was conducted by the state. Currently, it is the responsibility of the car dealer to complete the check via one of the following approved companies:

  • Sylvan/Identix Fingerprinting Centers (800) 377-2080
The completed background check must be forwarded to the Vehicle Services Department/Dealer Licensing Section.
