Applying for an Auto Dealers License in Pennsylvania
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) partners with the Pennsylvania (PA) State Board of Vehicle Dealers, Manufacturers and Salespersons to create and administer rules and regulations regarding auto dealers licenses in the Keystone State. Prospective car dealers are required to complete PA’s “Vehicle Dealership Initial License Application.” You are not permitted to conduct auto sales in PA until you receive your car dealer license.Contact the nearest PennDOT service center and request the dealers license application. Provide the following items on the dealers license application (use black ink to write or type your application responses):
- Name of your car dealership or business.
- Your business contact details including telephone number, street address, city, county, and zip code. Post office box numbers are not accepted.
- List the name and telephone number for the contact person at the dealership. PennDOT will contact this individual to conduct an inspection of the dealership.
- Provide the names of each partner, officer, or owner at the dealership. Include their Social Security number, official title, and home street address and telephone number.
- Indicate whether the auto dealership is a sole proprietorship (has one owner), is a partnership (has more than one owner), or is a corporation or an association.
- List the types of car sales your dealership will deal with (i.e. new cars, used cars, trucks, mobile homes, motorcycles).
Sign the dealer license application, include the check to cover your applicable PA dealer fees and return the completed application and check to:

Licenses for car dealers are renewed on every odd-numbered year. All licenses expire on May 31 of the odd-numbered year.
