Salesperson Exam Requirements by State

The majority of states do not require a salesperson license to become a car salesperson. In these states, the application process to become a salesperson varies with every dealer. If your state does not require a salesperson license, and you wish to pursue a career in auto sales, simply apply with the auto dealers in your area and the follow the process specific to each.

Car Dealer License

Likewise, new car dealers are considered franchises of the manufacturer and do require a state issued license to sell cars. Dealers of used cars, on the other hand, must possess a state issued dealer license in most states.

Salesperson License

Of the states that do require a salesperson license, very few require the passing of a sales person exam. States that issue sales person exams, such as West Virginia and the District of Columbia, typically require a fee of up to $90 per test, in addition to application fees, work history documents, and fingerprints for the purpose of a background check.

Consult the grid below to deduce the exam requirements for your state. Those marked “yes” require a license and an exam; those marked “no” may require a license, but they do not require a test.
