Know What's On Your Driving Record

There really is no way to clear your driving record, but it is possible for some negative items to be removed from your driving record if they are inaccurate or have exceeded their statute of limitations.

Driving records are maintained by each state’s Department of Motor Vehicles.  Driving records contain all information pertinent to a person’s driving history, including personally identifying information, violations, convictions, revocations and suspensions.  There is no way to clear all of this information from your driving record.  However, if any piece of information on your driving record is inaccurate, you may submit an appeal with your state’s Department of Motor Vehicles and request the change or removal.

Statute of Limitations

In addition, each state maintains a statute of limitations on the length of time items may appear on your driving record.  For example, serious convictions like DUIs remain on your driving record for up to 10 years in many states, while moving violations and accidents usually remain for three years.  Usually, those items will be automatically cleared from your driving record at that time; but it for some reason they do not disappear, you may submit an appeal.
