How often do people buy used cars that turn out to be stolen?
Accidentally Buying a Stolen Car
Each year, thousands of people buy used cars that turn out to be stolen. You might think it’s odd that a thief would sell a stolen used car on the open market. After all, you might wonder how anyone could sell a used car without a valid title in his or her name. But the reality is, thieves are sophisticated, and often they will forge titles and even replace or alter Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) to fool you into thinking the car is theirs.
Thousands of times each year in this country, an innocent used car buyer is confronted with a shocking discovery when they try to register their newly purchased used car at the DMV: the car was stolen. Having the car seized and returned to its rightful owner is only part of the problem. If you buy a stolen car, you’re also on the hook for its cost. The stolen car buyer loses whatever they paid for the car, whether it be a cash payment or a loan from the bank. Plus, you may be charged with a crime for purchasing stolen property.
Take Precautions: Protect Yourself Against Stolen Cars
If you’re considering buying a used car, always take precautions to ensure the car is not stolen.- Check to see if the VIN on the title matches the VIN on the car. The VIN is located in several areas, including the dashboard and driver's door; make sure all the VINs match.
- Run a check on the VIN with the DMV or law enforcement to ensure it’s not stolen.
- Obtain a vehicle history report on the car to review title and ownership history.
