How Vehicle History Reports Work

That’s a bit of a trick question.  Vehicles will have multiple vehicle history reports, but not because they’ve been registered in multiple states.

Vehicle history reports are not maintained by state agencies such as the Department of Motor Vehicles.  Vehicle history reports are compiled by private companies from data they receive from state DMVs, auto auctions, repair shops, rental agencies, and some police and fire departments.  Therefore, DMV registration in multiple states has no impact on the number of vehicle history reports maintained on a particular vehicle.

That being said, a given used car will have as many vehicle history reports as there are companies selling vehicle records, because each company compiles their own reports from data available to them.  As a result, vehicle history reports will vary in their content from company to company.

You can always order a thorough vehicle history report online, containing all important historical data like accidents, major repairs, and title history.

Ordering a Report

To order, you'll need the car's VIN number, or vehicle identification number. The VIN is on the title, the dashboard, and the driver's side door. They should all match. The seller should provide this to you.

Ordering a vehicle history report online is convenient and fast, so take a moment today and order your vehicle history report.
