How Long Infractions Appear

Generally speaking, any driving-related infractions you receive will appear on your driving record anywhere from 3-10 years, depending upon the infraction and the state.  However, most states will allow you to keep minor infractions off of your driving record by paying a fine and completing a driver’s education course.

Driving records contain all information pertinent to your driving history, such as moving violations, accidents, and driving-related convictions.  Yet there is a delay between the time you receive the citation and when it appears on your driving record.  That delay can be anywhere between 30-60 days or much longer, depending on whether you contest the infraction and how efficient your state’s bureaucracy is.

If you are able to successfully contest an infraction and get it dismissed, it will be kept off your driving record.  And even if an infraction is upheld, most states will allow you to keep minor violations like speeding off your driving record after you pay a fine and complete a driver’s education course.
