Two Types of Records

Driving records and criminal records are two distinct types of records maintained by different state agencies, yet some information, such as driving-related criminal convictions, appear on both a driving record and a criminal record.

Everyone has any number of background records maintained on them, including driving records, criminal records, credit reports, medical records, and employment records.  Driving records and criminal records are two of the most commonly used background searches used in employment screening.  While these two records are different, they do share certain similarities.

What They Contain

A driving record is maintained by each state’s Department of Motor Vehicles and contains a detailed history of a driver, including accidents, moving violations, convictions such as DUI, revocations, suspensions and personally-identifying information.  A criminal record is maintained by law enforcement, the state Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, among others, and contains information pertaining to arrests and convictions.  So if any of those convictions involve driving-related crimes, such as DUI, such items will appear on both a driving record and a criminal record.

If you’d like to know what items may appear on both your driving record and criminal record, you can order your driving record and background check online.  Ordering each report is convenient and easy and will get you the information you need.
