Renewing or Replacing a Learners Permit in Alabama
You must be at least 15 years of age to get a drivers permit in Alabama (AL). You must be at least 16 years of age to receive a regular drivers license in the state. Permits are good for four years from the date that they are issued.Should you lose your AL driving permit or should the permit become damaged or stolen, you can replace the permit. If you feel that you need additional time to practice driving before you take the road test, you can renew the permit. The permit must be current (not expired).
Visit the nearest probate judge or Department of Public Safety (DPS) license office to replace or renew the permit. Provide proof of identity (i.e. Social Security card, birth certificate, school identification card) to the clerk. You do not have to take the practice permit test or retake the actual written permit test to receive a replaced or renewed learners permit in AL.
It costs $18.50 to replace a driving permit in AL. It cost $23.50 to renew the permit. Pay the fee via a money order. Cash and personal checks are not accepted. Make the money order out to:

Include your first and last name and driving learners permit number with the money order. If you are younger than the 17, include a copy of your Student Enrollment Exclusion Form (DL-1-93) with the money order. You can apply to renew your learners permit 60 days before the permit is due to expire.
