What restrictions apply to new and teen drivers with a CT drivers license? Connecticut

New Driver Checklist
New drivers license restrictions in Connecticut only apply to those who are either 16 or 17 years old. Once a driver turns 18, the restrictions cease.

However, until that time, there are numerous restrictions that must be followed.

CT Driver License Rules for 16- and 17-Year-Old Drivers

After you receive your drivers license, during the first six months you may only drive with:

  • Parents or your legal guardians (one must be licensed).
  • A licensed driving instructor.
  • Someone who is at least 20 years old, and has held a license for at least the last four years without a suspension
For the following six months, you can also drive with other immediate family members.

During this initial licensing period, you can't drive between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. unless it's for work, school, religious activities, or medical necessity. Additionally, no matter where they're sitting in your car, all your passengers must wear their seat belts. And, you can't use a cell phone or other electronic mobile device while driving.

Keep in mind these are the restrictions for those with a drivers license.

CT Drivers Permit Restrictions

Besides the seat belt and cell phone restrictions mentioned above, with a driving permit you can only drive with a parent, legal guardian, or qualified trainer with you. And, while you can drive during the overnight hours, a qualified trainer must be with you.
