DE Drivers Permit Process

  1. Pass a certified Delaware Driver Education Course.
  2. Bring the Delaware Driver Education Certificate (Blue Certificate) to a DE DMV branch office.
  3. Bring proof of your name, date of birth, and Social Security number (if you have one).
  4. Bring two proofs of Delaware residency (unless your sponsor lives at your address and is a currently licensed Delaware driver).
  5. Fill out a driving permit application.
  6. Bring your sponsor (usually a parent or legal guardian) who will sign the application.
  7. Pass a vision test.
  8. Pay the $25 permit fee.
Your driving permit is the gateway to getting your drivers license. You don't need to take a practice permit test to apply for your permit, but doing so can help reinforce what you've learned through your driver education course.
