Replacing and Renewing an ID Drivers Permit

In the state of Idaho, all prospective drivers younger than 18 must obtain an Idaho learners permit - also know as a supervised instructional permit (SIP) - before they can apply for an ID drivers license.

Replacing Permits

If you lose your driving permit, or if your drivers permit is stolen, you can purchase a duplicate permit for $11.50 at your local drivers license office. Contact the Idaho Division of Motor Vehicles for the address and telephone number of your county’s drivers license office.

Expired Permits

Permits are valid for 24 months. That means there’s usually no need to renew a permit.

When your permit expires, you must apply for an ID drivers license, in order to continue driving legally. Complete the following steps to apply for an ID drivers license:

  1. Complete an approved driver training program.
  2. Complete 50 hours of supervised drive time, to include 10 hours of night driving.
  3. Become familiar with the Idaho Driver’s Manual.
  4. Take a practice permit test, available through the Idaho DMV, in addition to independent websites like the Unofficial DMV Guide.
  5. Schedule an appointment for a written knowledge test, and a road skills test, at your local drivers license office.

Required Documents and Fees

After completing the steps above, submit the following documents to your county’s drivers license office:

  • Your original SIP.
  • Certificate of completion of an approved driver-training program.
  • Proof of completion of the required practice hours.
  • $3 fee for the written knowledge test.
  • $15 fee for the road skills test.
  • Proof of your auto insurance and registration.
Successful completion of the road skills test and written knowledge test is the final requirement for an Idaho drivers license.
