How do I apply for an IL learners permit? Illinois
Applying for a learners permit, also known as a drivers permit or driving permit, is the first step in the Illinois Graduated Driver License (GDL) program for teen drivers. The purpose of a permit is to allow you to practice operating a motor vehicle under the supervision of an experienced driver. If you are stopped by a law enforcement officer for driving without a permit, you will not be allowed to obtain a drivers license until age 18.
Identification requirements for the learners permit are as follows:
A short vision screening is required in order to be issued an Illinois drivers permit. The vision screening simply tests if you can see well enough to drive safely. You can wear your contacts or glasses if needed, but your permit will have a corrective lenses restriction on it.
The written exam tests your knowledge of basic safety procedures and traffic sign identification. The test is made up of multiple-choice and true/false questions. Practice permit test questions, as well as a detailed outline of all the state drivers license laws you must learn, can be found in the driver handbook published by the Illinois Driver Services office.
Your learners permit is valid for up to two years. The permit must be held for at least nine months with no convictions before you can advance to the next stage of the GDL system.
A nighttime driving restriction is in place Sunday through Thursday from 10:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. and Friday through Saturday from 11:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. However, please keep in mind that different cities in Illinois may have local curfews that differ from the state’s nighttime driving restriction.
