Do I need an IL drivers permit before applying for an Illinois drivers license? Illinois

New Driver Checklist

Illinois Permit Requirements by Age

A drivers instruction permit allows you to legally practice driving while under the supervision of a licensed driver. With a learners permit, you can develop the skills you need to pass the road skills test to obtain an Illinois drivers license.

To earn a driving permit, you will need to pass a vision screening and a written exam. A study guide for the written exam, as well as practice permit test questions, can be found in the driver handbook created by the Illinois Driver Services office.

Drivers Younger Than Age 18

Drivers between the ages of 15 and 18 can apply for a learners permit with parental consent after they have enrolled in an approved driver education course. The permit is the first step in the IL Graduated Driver License (GDL) program for teen drivers. It allows you to drive when supervised by a parent or guardian with an equal or greater license classification who has held a valid driver license for at least one year.

The learners permit for drivers under age 18 is valid for up to two years and must be held for at least nine months with no convictions before you can apply for an intermediate drivers license.

Drivers Older Than Age 18

If you are older than 18, the process for getting your license is a bit easier. As an adult driver, you do not have to follow the rules of the GDL program. You will be issued a drivers permit that is valid for 12 months. Your permit allows you to drive when supervised by an adult who has an equal or greater license classification and has held a valid license for at least one year.

You can take the road skills test needed to obtain a full drivers license as soon as you feel you are ready to pass the exam.
