Illinois Permit Test Requirements
In order to earn an Illinois driving permit, you must complete both a vision screening and a written knowledge test. Since the purpose of learners permit is to allow you to practice driving under the supervision of an experienced instructor, no driving test is required as part of the application process.The vision screening is simply a short exam to determine if you can see well enough to drive safely. You are allowed to wear glasses or contacts if needed, but your driving permit will have a corrective lenses restriction on it.
The written knowledge test is made up of true/false and multiple-choice questions covering traffic sign identification, the rules of the road, and safe driving procedures. You can prepare for the written knowledge test by reviewing the information in the driver handbook published by the IL Driver Services office. The handbook also contains practice permit test questions to help you study.
Other Permit Requirements
In addition to completing the tests mentioned above, you will also need the following when you apply for your drivers permit:
- Parent/guardian consent.
- Proof of enrollment in an approved driver education course.
- Document with written signature.
- Proof of date of birth.
- Social Security number.
- Illinois residency data.
- Payment for the $20 permit fee.
