An Illinois drivers permit, also known as a learners permit, allows you to practice driving when accompanied by a licensed driver. It is against the law to drive without your permit in your possession.

Renewing Your Learners Permit

In most cases you will not need to worry about renewing your permit. If you are younger than 18, your permit is valid for two years and must be held for at least nine months with no convictions before you can apply for an intermediate drivers license. If you are older than 18, your drivers permit is valid for one year and you can apply for a full drivers license as soon as you feel you are ready to pass the driving skills test.

If you need to renew your permit, however, you can simply visit an IL Driver Services office to exchange your current permit and pay a $20 fee to be issued a new permit.

Obtaining Duplicate Driving Permits

If you have lost or damaged your learners permit, you can request a replacement permit for a $5 fee. You will need to show the verification of your written signature and proof of either your birth date, Social Security number, or Illinois residency.

Learners permits, like an Illinois drivers license, need to have accurate contact information. If you need to change the name or address on your permit, you must follow the same process used to obtain a duplicate for a lost or damaged driving permit.
