Do I need an IN drivers permit before applying for an Indiana drivers license? Indiana

New Driver Checklist

Indiana Drivers Permit and Drivers License

A learners permit is required in order to apply for a drivers license. After obtaining a permit you must, as of July 1, 2010, hold it for a minimum of 160 days before the BMV will allow you to make a road test appointment.

Driving Permit Test Requirements

If you're unfamiliar with how to obtain an IN permit, you must first focus on passing a written test. To prepare, you'll need to grab an Indiana drivers manual. All questions are based on information covered in the handbook, including hand signals, parking maneuvers, and proper passing techniques. Manuals are free and can be found at all BMV offices or online at the BMV website.

Once you have a solid grasp of the information, you'll want to take a practice permit test. These tests can be found online from one of any number of independent sites. Practice permit tests mirror the actual written exam, lending good insight on what to expect.

You do not need an appointment for a written test. Exams are administered on a walk-in basis. You must arrive, however, at least one hour before closing.
