What are the IN driving permit test requirements? Indiana

New Driver Checklist

IN Learners Permit and Drivers License

Before you can apply for an Indiana drivers license you must first pass a written permit test. The test consists of 25 questions based on information contained in the state's 84-page Driver's Guide. To pass you must answer a minimum of 20 questions correctly.

The state's driving handbook is your prime study source. It addresses all possible test topics including speed limits, lane markings and turning at intersections. You can download it from the BMV website, or, if you prefer a hardcopy, visit any BMV office.

Next, after studying the manual, you should take at least one practice permit test. These exams feature questions similar to those found on the actual permit test, giving you a good idea on whether or not you're ready to apply for a driving permit. Practice permit tests abound online. Take as many as needed until you feel test-confident.

Applying for Drivers Permit

No appointment is needed for the written test. All exams are administered on a walk-in basis. Be sure to arrive at least one hour before the office closes.

In addition to the written exam you will also be given a vision test. You must pass both to receive an Indiana driving permit.

Depending on whether you're applying for a Learners Permit (applicants 16 or older) or Driver Education Learners Permit (applicants under 16) you'll need to bring the following:

  • Your Social Security card.
  • Proof of identity, age, and state residency.
  • Proof of enrollment in a state-approved driver education program (only for applicants younger than 16).
  • A completed financial responsibility agreement signed by parent or guardian (only for applicants younger 18). This confirms to the state that the applicant is covered by auto insurance in the event of an accident.
  • Payment for the $9 drivers permit fee.
