Renew or Replace an Indiana Drivers Permit

Renew Learners Permit

Permits for applicants who apply before turning 15 years and three months old are valid until they reach 16 years and three months old. All other permits are valid for exactly one year. If it expires you'll need to renew your permit before you can apply for a drivers license.

You can renew by visiting your local IN BMV office with:

  • Proper identification, including your Social Security card.
  • Payment for the $9 learners permit fee.
If you allow your permit to expire, you will be required to pass another written test (see below for details).

Replace IN Driving Permit

Replacing a learners permit is an easy process. Visit any BMV office with:

  • Proper identification
  • Payment for the $9 replacement fee.

Need to Take the Written Exam?

This test consists of 25 questions and you must answer at least 20 correctly to pass. All questions are based on topics addressed in the state's drivers handbook. You can download a copy from the BMV website, or you can grab one from your local BMV office.

After studying the manual you'll next want to take a practice permit test. These tests, which flourish online, feature questions similar to those found on the actual exam.
