The KS Driving Permit

Anyone 14 or older is eligible for a Kansas learners permit, but before visiting a DOR office to apply you'll need to study for the state's permit exam. All of the questions are based on information covered in the state's drivers manual, which, not surprisingly, should be your number one study source. You can download a copy from the DOR website, or, if you prefer a hardcopy, you can obtain one from your local DOR office.

After studying the KS drivers handbook you'll next want to take at least one practice permit test. These exams abound online, allowing you to take as many tests as you deem necessary. Practice permit tests are valuable study sources. All of the questions are patterned after the questions found on the actual permit exam, giving you an accurate gauge of your actual test-readiness.

NOTE: The written test requirement will be waived if you have proof of completing a state-approved drivers ed course. Keep in mind, however, that drivers ed is not a requirement in Kansas.

Applying for Drivers Permit

When you think you're ready to ace the written test, visit any DOR office with:

  • Proof of age, identity, and Kansas residency.
  • A parent or guardian to sign your permit application (only applicable if 16 or younger).
  • Payment for the $20 learners permit fee.
You must hold the permit for a minimum of one year before you can apply for a drivers license.
