What restrictions apply to new and teen drivers with a KS drivers license? Kansas

New Driver Checklist

Driving Restrictions for Kansas Teens

Eligibility for a restricted drivers license kicks in after you've held your KS learners permit for one year. Just as your drivers permit did, and as the name implies, this license comes with driving restrictions.

Restricted Driver License: Age 15

  • You can only drive to and from work and school.
  • No use of cell phone unless for a medical emergency or to report illegal activity.
  • You cannot have any non-family passengers.
You'll upgrade to a less restricted license if, when turning 16, you've submitted your 50-hour driving affidavit and maintained a spotless driving record.

All restrictions are waived if you’re accompanied by another licensed driver.

Less Restricted Driver License: Age 16

  • You can drive anywhere between the hours of 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. Exemption granted for authorized school activities or work.
  • No use of cell phone unless for a medical emergency or to report illegal activity.
  • You cannot have more than one non-family passenger younger than 18.
All restrictions are waived if you’re supervised by another licensed driver. Otherwise, restrictions will be lifted after holding your license for six months or until you turn 17, whichever comes first.
