Replace or Renew a Kentucky Drivers Permit
Replace a KY Learners Permit
If your driving permit is lost, stolen, or becomes unreadable you'll need to apply for a replacement permit. The process is simple and requires nothing more than visiting your local Circuit County Clerk's office with:
- Proper identification.
- Payment to cover the $12 duplicate permit fee.
Renew a KY Driving Permit
Permits are valid for one year. If you allow yours to expire you'll be required to reapply, rather than renew, following the same steps as when you initially applied. This includes presenting:
- Your birth certificate (must be original or certified).
- Your Social Security card.
- School Compliance Verification form, if younger than 18.
- A completed permit application. If you’re younger than 18 it must be signed by a parent or a guardian.
- Payment to cover the $12 permit fee.
You'll need the state's drivers manual to study for the written test. All questions are based on information contained in the manual. You can obtain a hardcopy from the Kentucky State Police or from your Circuit County Clerk. Or, if you prefer, you can download from the DDL website.
After studying, you should also take a practice permit test. Questions are similar in style and format to those found on the actual exam. You can find practice permit tests online.
