Replace or Renew Louisiana Permits

Replace a Learners Permit

If your LA driving permit has gone missing, you'll need to visit your local OMV office with:

  • Picture identification.
  • Your birth certificate.
  • A parent or guardian, if you’re younger than 17.
  • Payment for the drivers permit fee. Depending on your parish, this will range from $13 to $16.
Be sure to replace your permit quickly. It's illegal to drive without a drivers permit in your possession. If stopped, you may be ticketed, which could delay your pursuit of obtaining a Louisiana drivers license.

Renew a LA Driving Permit

A permit is valid for four years. If, however, you allow it to expire you'll need to visit your local OMV office to renew the permit. Bring:

  • Proper identification.
  • Payment for $21.50 renewal fee, or $36.50 if it has been expired for more than 10 days.
You may be required to pass the written test. To prepare, study the state's drivers manual. You can obtain a hardcopy from any OMV office, or, if you prefer, download one from the OMV website. You should also take at least one online practice permit test.
