What restrictions apply to new and teen drivers with a ME drivers license? Maine

New Driver Checklist

ME Teens and Driver License Driving Restrictions

As a teen you're eligible to apply for a Maine drivers license when you reach 16. Until you turn 18 you will be required to adhere to the following driving restrictions:

  • No driving between midnight and 5 a.m.
  • No passengers other than immediate family members or any exchange students living in your household. This restriction will be waived if you're accompanied by a licensed operator who has held a license for a minimum of two years, is at least 20 years old, rides in the front seat next to you, and owns a license that matches the class of vehicle you're driving.
NOTE: Immediate family includes: grandparent, stepgrandparent, parent, stepparent, brother, stepbrother, sister, stepsister, child, stepchild, or spouse.

Keep in mind that your first drivers license is considered provisional, regardless of age. The provisional label carries for two years if you're younger than 21, or one year if you're 21 or older. This means your drivers license will be suspended for 30 days (without right to a hearing) if you're convicted of a moving violation during your provisional period.

Learners Permit Driving Restrictions

You cannot operate a vehicle with a driving permit unless accompanied by someone who is at least 20 years old and has owned a drivers license for at least two years.
