What are the MD driving permit test requirements? Maryland

New Driver Checklist

Maryland Permit Test Requirements

You must be at least 15 years and nine months old to take the state's permit test (knowledge), which is part of the driving permit application process. In addition, you must also be a Maryland resident who can provide proof of residency.

A permit test generally consists of 20 questions. You must record a score of 85% or higher to pass.

How to Study for the Permit Test

All of the test questions are based on driving topics - road sign identification, auto insurance responsibilities, DUI - found in the state's drivers manual, your prime study source. You can obtain a free copy from any MVA office, or by downloading from MVA website.

After studying, gauge if you're ready or not by taking at least one practice test. These can generally be found online from a numerous number of sources and feature questions similar to those found on the actual permit test.

How to Apply for a Driving Permit

To obtain a learners permit you'll need to visit any full-service MVA office and provide:

  • Your Social Security number or proof of ineligibility.
  • Proof of age.
  • Proof of lawful presence.
  • Proof of identity.
  • Proof of Maryland residency.
  • A completed MD permit application. If you’re younger than 18, it must be signed by a parent or guardian.
  • A Learner's Permit School Attendance Certification (Form DL-300), if you’re younger than 16.
  • Payment to cover $50 drivers permit fee.
In addition, you'll also need to pass a vision screening. No appointment is needed.

You must hold your driving permit for at least six months before applying for a provisional drivers license, the next step in the state's graduated driver licensing program.
