How do I apply for a MA learners permit? Massachusetts
Massachusetts Drivers Permit
Any MA resident 16 or older is eligible to apply for a learners permit. But before visiting your local RMV office you'll first need to prepare for the state's 25-question permit test. All test questions are based on information contained in the state's driver manual. You can obtain a copy from any RMV office or by downloading from the RMV website.
After studying the manual you'll next want to take a practice permit test. These tests, which can be found online, feature questions similar to those on the actual permit exam, allowing you to accurately assess if you're test-ready.
Applying for Driving Permit
Visit any RMV office to apply. Be sure to bring with you:- A completed Class D, M, or D/M License and ID Card Application. This can be downloaded from the RMV website. If you’re younger than 18 you will need a parent or guardian to sign.
- Your Social Security card.
- Proof of birth and identity.
- Proof of signature and residency, if 18 or older.
- Cash or a check, money order, or credit card (MasterCard, Visa, Discover, American Express) to pay the $30 permit test fee.
If you pass both tests you'll leave the RMV with a driving permit, the first step towards obtaining a MA drivers license. The learners permit is valid for two years.
NOTE: Proof of completing a driver education course only required when applying for a drivers license.
