Do I need a MA drivers permit before applying for a Massachusetts drivers license? Massachusetts

New Driver Checklist

Massachusetts Drivers Permit and Drivers License Requirements

A learners permit is required for all drivers, regardless of age, in order to obtain a drivers license. There's no getting around this requirement. On the day of your Class D road test you must present your driving permit to the examiner or you won't be given the test.

Obtain a Driving Permit

To qualify for a permit you must first pass a 25-question written test. All questions are based on material covered in the state's drivers manual. You can grab a copy from any RMV office or download it from the RMV website. Study the entire manual.

Next, take at least one practice permit test. These exams feature similar questions to those found on the actual permit test, allowing you to accurately gauge if you're test-ready. You can find page-after-page of practice permit tests online. Take as many practice tests as needed.

When you're ready to take the permit test, visit any MA RMV office and have with you:

  • A completed learners permit application. It must be signed by a parent or guardian if you're younger than 18.
  • Your Social Security card.
  • Proof of identity and date of birth.
  • Proof of signature and residency, if 18 or older.
  • Cash or a check or credit card (Discover, American Express, Visa, MasterCard) to pay the $30 permit fee.
You'll be given 20 minutes to answer 25 questions. You must answer at least 18 correctly to pass. In addition, while at the RMV, you'll also be given vision screening.

The permit is valid for two years.
