Massachusetts Permit Test
To obtain a learners permit, the first step towards a Massachusetts drivers license, you must pass a written permit test. This test features 25 questions based on information contained in the state's drivers manual. You have 20 minutes to complete the exam and must answer a minimum of 18 questions correctly to pass.You must be at least 16 years old to take the test, which is part of the driving permit application process
Study for the Driving Permit Test
To prepare for the exam you'll want to study the state's drivers manual. You can grab a copy from any RMV office or by downloading from the RMV website. The manual covers all driving topics including road sign identification, passing procedures, and auto insurance requirements. Study all topics.Next, take at least one practice permit test. These exams feature questions similar to those on the actual written test, allowing you to accurately gauge if you're adequately prepared. Practice permit tests can be found online from a multitude of sites.
Required Documents
On the day of the permit test be sure to bring to the MA RMV with you:
- A completed Class D, M, or D/M License and ID Card Application. It must be signed by a parent or guardian if you’re younger than 18.
- Your Social Security card.
- Proof of birth.
- Proof of signature and Massachusetts residency, if 18 or older.
- Cash or a check, money order, or credit card (Visa, Discover, American Express, MasterCard) to pay the $30 drivers permit test fee.
