What restrictions apply to new and teen drivers with a MA drivers license? Massachusetts

New Driver Checklist

Massachusetts Junior Operator License Restrictions

If you're a teen driver who has just upgraded from a learners permit to a junior operator license (JOL) you will be required to comply with the following driving restrictions:

  • During the first six months of holding your JOL you cannot have any passenger younger than 18 unless it's an immediate family member. There are no exemptions for school-related activities. If you're caught violating this restriction your driver license will be suspended for 60 days.
  • No driving between 12:30 a.m. and 5 a.m. If you’re caught driving during these hours you may face a 60-day license suspension and be charged a $100 reinstatement fee.
NOTE: Restrictions are waived if you're accompanied by another person who is at least 21 years old, has at least one year of driving experience, owns a valid drivers license, and is seated in front.

MA Drivers Permit Restrictions

When holding a driving permit you must abide by the following restrictions:

  • You must always be accompanied by another rider who is at least 21, owns a valid drivers license, has at least one year of driving experience, and is seated next to you.
  • You cannot drive between midnight and 5 a.m. unless accompanied by a parent or guardian.
  • You cannot drive in another state if it's in violation of that state's law. If you're unsure of the law, check with that state's DMV.
