About the Learners Permit in MS
If you hold a drivers license from another state, then you do not need a driving permit before you apply for a MS drivers license.If you have never had a drivers license or are younger than 18, then you must apply for a drivers permit first.
Applying for a Drivers Permit
To apply for a learners permit in Mississippi:- Visit a DPS driver license office.
- Bring your birth certificate, original Social Security card, and a notarized verification of your signature.
- If you’re age 15 and under age 17, have your parents sign the application.
- Pass the vision test.
- Pay the $4 permit fee in cash.
- Take the written test.
- Study the MS Driver’s Manual. You can be tested on anything from this manual, no matter how small.
- Take a practice permit test. Drivers ed websites are a good place to find tests with 50 to 100 questions taken from the MS Manual; most will let you try it out for free. Taking practice tests also helps most people study.
Taking the Road Test
If you’re younger than 18, you’ll hold the permit for at least six months before trying the road test.If you’re older than 18, then you can practice at your leisure with a licensed driver 21 or older before taking the road test.
Note that:
- The road test earns you an Intermediate License for a $6 fee. Hold this for a year or until you turn 18. Then you can get a regular drivers license upon application.
- If you're older than 18, you'll be granted a regular drivers license.
