What are the MS driving permit test requirements? Mississippi

New Driver Checklist

Drivers Permit Written Test

To qualify to take a learners permit test in MS, you must:

  • Be at least 15 years old.
  • Have a certified copy of your birth certificate.
  • Have an original Social Security card.
  • Get your signature notarized.
  • Be able to pass the vision test.
  • Pay $4 in cash.

Preparing for the Exam

Besides getting together all this paperwork, you must also prepare for the written permit test. Do not simply walk into a DPS office to take the written test without studying, or you'll fail.

To prepare, you can:

  • Read the Mississippi Driver’s Manual, which is where the DPS gets its questions.
  • Take a practice permit test. The more practice tests you take, the better you’ll know the material, even if you didn’t read the manual. Of course, because the DPS can test you on anything, it’s still a good idea to look over the manual.

Drivers License Road Test

After you’ve held a driving permit for at least six months if you’re younger than 18 (adults may skip the waiting period) you can schedule a road test and get your Intermediate License (Class Y). This costs $6.

To take the road test, you’ll have to get proper auto insurance for the car. The car will also be inspected before you drive for the examiner, and it must be registered. The car doesn't have to be pretty or new, but it does need to be in good working condition with all the lights and signals and doors working before the examiner will get in and test you.
