Renew a Driving Permit

A Mississippi learners permit is good for one year. If, at the end of the year, you don't feel you will pass the drivers test, or you simply decide you're not ready for the regular drivers license, you may renew the driving permit.

To renew, visit a MS DPS drivers license office and pay the $4 fee. Renew the drivers permit before it expires (see below), or you’ll have to pay a late fee of $1.

Expired Permits

If you’ve let months elapse between the expiration and when you try to renew it, you may have to reapply and take the test again.

If this happens, remember to take a practice permit test before you try to pass the written test. This will refresh your memory about traffic rules and give you a good warm-up to the real thing. Tests are available online for $15 to $20.

Replace a Lost Permit

To replace a lost permit, visit a MS DPS office in person and pay $6. The expiration date will be the same as it was on the original permit.

If you lose the permit again, the fee will jump to $11 for a replacement, and the expiration date will still be the same.
