What restrictions apply to new and teen drivers with a MS drivers license? Mississippi

New Driver Checklist

Steps to a Non-Restricted Driver License

Mississippi has several steps involved for teens to get a non-restricted drivers license. In general, the steps, or levels, are:

  1. Learners Permit (LP) $4: Six months to one year.
  2. Restricted Drivers License (Class Y) $6: One year.
  3. Under 18 License (Class R) $6: One year, or until your 18th birthday.
  4. Regular Non-Restricted Driver License, older than 18 years old: $21.

Driving Permit Restrictions

If you have a learners permit, you may only drive with another licensed driver, age 21 or older, sitting in the front passenger seat next to you. This is the rule no matter how old you are, teen or adult. Those with a drivers permit may never drive alone.

Restricted Drivers License

Once you pass the driving test and get a restricted driver license, you may drive alone with some driving restrictions:

  • You may drive between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.
  • If you have to drive outside of these hours, you have to bring an adult older than 21 with you.
  • You have to hold the restricted drivers license for one year.

Under 18 Class R Regular License

After you have successfully held the restricted driver license for one year, you can apply for an Under 18 Class R license for $6.

Note that:

  • You must show the DPS a Certificate of School Attendance (get this from your high school) before you are issued the restricted driver license, if you are younger than 18 and not married. If you are married, this step is not required.
  • This is an unrestricted license, meaning you may drive solo during all hours.
  • Once you turn 18, or for one year (whichever is first), you will apply for a regular MS Class R license.
