What restrictions apply to new and teen drivers with a MO drivers license? Missouri

New Driver Checklist
This varies a bit according to whether you have an instruction drivers permit or an intermediate license, as well as your age. See below for details.

MO Driving Permit Restrictions

  • If you're younger than 16 years old, you must drive with a qualified person, grandparent, or driving instructor in the front seat.
  • If you're older than that, you must drive with a currently licensed driver (at least 21) in the front seat.
  • Everyone in your car must wear a safety belt, no matter where they're seated.
  • You must have your permit with you when driving.

MO Intermediate License Restrictions

  • You can't drive with more than a single passenger who is 18 or younger during your first six months of holding this driver license (this passenger restriction doesn't apply to immediate family members).
  • After this period, you can drive with up to three individuals who are 18 or younger (again, not including family members).
  • You can't drive between 1 a.m. and 5 p.m. unless you're with a currently licensed driver who's at least 21, you're going to and from a school activity or work, or it's for an emergency situation.
  • Everyone in your car must wear a seat belt, no matter where they're seated.
  • Always have your license with you when driving.
These teen-driver restrictions for learners permit and intermediate license holders are there for a reason. Teens especially need to develop their driving skills, and focus their attention on driving.

For additional information on these restrictions, contact the Missouri DOR at (573) 751-4600 or drop by a drivers license office.
